Santiago de Cuba
Cuba's second largest city, Santiago de Cuba, is very close behind Havana in terms of historical and cultural importance. Lying on a sheltered bay on the south-east coast, the city is a melting pot of numerous ethnic influences that have joined to produce a friendly, laid-back atmosphere famous for its music, dancing and hospitality.
Santiago de Cuba is bordered by the majestic Sierra Maestre mountains, offering a striking backdrop. The best beaches are a bit of a drive from the city, but there are numerous hideaway coves very nearby. Santiago de Cuba is rich with wonderful museums, incredibly friendly people, and is urban Cuba at its unspoiled best.
